Overview
Sheet piling was installed to provide temporary excavation support during major rail infrastructure upgrades. The system was designed to retain surrounding ground and protect adjacent assets while deep excavations were carried out for new structures and services. Working within a live rail environment, the sheet piles were installed using methods suited to tight access and strict vibration or noise limits, ensuring minimal disruption to rail operations. The temporary support allowed safe and efficient excavation while maintaining ground stability and worker safety throughout the construction process.

Challenges
The original design called for large-section sheet piles to be installed using crane-suspended equipment. However, this approach posed significant challenges within the constrained rail corridor, where space was limited and access was tightly controlled. The use of crane-suspended rigs conflicted with available working room and created scheduling complications, especially during short and infrequent track possession windows. These limitations made it difficult to mobilise, operate, and demobilise large equipment efficiently. As a result, the methodology required reassessment to develop a more practical solution that aligned with site constraints, safety requirements, and critical rail shutdown periods.

Solution
Piletech proposed a redesign using smaller section sheet piles. This allowed for installation using more compact excavator-mounted equipment, improving efficiency and reducing disruption. The solution better aligned with tight working windows and helped coordinate seamlessly with other active work fronts on site.
